N-dodecanoyl-L-homoserine lactone, also called C12-HSL, is a small, diffusible bacterial quorum-sensing signal that influences gene expression and cellular metabolism. It is also reported to activate NF-κB in RAW 264.7 macrophages, increasing expression of TNF-α, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and IL-8, and to alter cell cycling and metabolism in human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells.
