(C0) Carnitine participates in fatty acid metabolism through mitochondrial β-oxidation and is used primarily as a control for MS/MS. Its reported antioxidant activity includes protection of cellular organelles and DNA from hydroxyl and other radicals. Carnitine and its derivatives are also measured in studies of aging processes.
