Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) is an omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid, cataloged among natural lipids and lipid carboxylic acids. Reported cellular effects include DNA demethylation associated with re-expression of the tumor suppressor gene CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein delta (C/EBPdelta).
In U937 leukemia cells, EPA is reported to activate the RAS/ERK/C/EBPbeta pathway through H-Ras intron 1 CpG island demethylation. It has also been reported to promote vascular smooth muscle cell relaxation and vasodilation. Its molecular formula is C20H30O2 and molecular weight is 302.5.
