9CCN is a cholesterol ester and oxidized anionic lipid associated with atherosclerotic lesions. It occurs within plaque macrophages and extracellularly in lesions, where it acts as an "eat-me" signal promoting phagocytic clearance of apoptotic debris.
Research applications include the development of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) carrying antagomiRs to macrophages in vitro and in vivo.
