Mal-PEG4-acid combines a maleimide group and a terminal carboxylic acid through a hydrophilic PEG spacer that increases solubility in aqueous media. The maleimide reacts with thiol groups to create covalent attachments to thiol-bearing biomolecules. With activators such as EDC or HATU, the carboxylic acid can couple to primary amines to form a stable amide bond.
