Capecitabine is a fluoropyrimidine carbamate and antimetabolite prodrug that is converted to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Further metabolism in tumor and normal cells produces 5-fluoro-2-deoxyuridine monophosphate (FdUMP) and 5-fluorouridine triphosphate (FUTP). FdUMP reduces normal thymidine production, inhibiting DNA synthesis and cell division. FUTP competes with uridine triphosphate for incorporation into RNA, inhibiting RNA and protein synthesis.
